According to Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer, most European countries believe that war is never a good tool of politics. At the same time, sanctions against Russia do not affect it as quickly as previously thought, which is somewhat disappointing. At the same time, Nehammer stressed that it is too early to assess the impact of sanctions.
“I would argue that sanctions should harm those against whom we introduce them more than those who impose them. Austria’s position is clear: a gas embargo is not an option. If a gas embargo had been introduced, German industry would have fallen, and with it the Austrian economy would have pulled down, ”said the Chancellor.
However, Nehammer noted that the world must continue to support Ukraine, despite the slow impact of sanctions.
Earlier, the energy ministers of the European Union countries reached a political agreement on a voluntary reduction in gas consumption in the coming winter against the backdrop of gas blackmail by the Russian authorities.
As reported, Gazprom is decommissioning another gas turbine engine for Nord Stream 1, significantly reducing the daily volume of gas pumped to Europe.
Recall that the turbine, built in Canada by Siemens, was sent for repairs to Montreal and “stuck” there due to sanctions against the Russian oil and gas industry due to its war in Ukraine. Then German officials urged Canada to find a way to get the turbine back, fearing that Russia would use the problem as an excuse to close Nord Stream 1 and hurt Germany’s ability to fill its gas storage tanks ahead of winter.
The Government of Canada responded declaredwhich would make an exception to the sanctions against Russia and send the turbine, which had been serviced in Canada, back to Germany.
After that, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, according to Bild, welcomed Canada’s decision to transfer a turbine for the Nord Stream gas pipeline to Germany.
Meanwhile, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said that the decision of the Canadian government to return the repaired turbine to Germany to resume the full operation of the Russian Nord Stream gas pipeline was a very bad precedent, since such a step is contrary to sanctions against the Russian Federation.
