The show quickly grabs viewers by going beyond the usual style of crime-solving and delving into the complex emotional lives of the characters, exploring themes of redemption, identity, and the essence of good and evil.
Moreover, the characters of the series are so well written that viewers can easily understand them despite the fact that some of them are celestial beings due to all the human problems they face during the show. While some viewers may not agree with the series finale, one thing is for sure: everyone has a fantastic transformational arc.
10 Trixie Espinoza
Trixie (Scarlett Estevez) the arc may be less dramatic compared to the adults around her, but she still shows growth, innocence, and a growing understanding of the world around her. At the start of the series, Trixie is a lively and curious young girl who is often portrayed as a light in her parents’ lives, providing moments of genuine joy and innocence amidst the series’ dark themes.
Trixie’s character development shows her growing up and adjusting to new circumstances throughout the series. She becomes more perceptive, demonstrating the ability to sense the emotional state of those around her. By the end of the show, Trixie has grown into a very capable, wise and compassionate young woman who brought out the best in her parents.
9 God
God is absent at the beginning of the series, and his goals and objectives are unknown. He is portrayed as aloof and uninterested, allowing his angel sons, Lucifer and Amenadiel (DB Woodside) to navigate the Earth in their own ways.
However, as the series progresses, God (Dennis Haysbert) decides to visit Earth and interact directly with the other characters. This marks an important turning point in his character. The purpose of God’s coming to Earth is to resolve family conflicts and answer questions about his plan by revealing more about his true nature. It is then revealed that he is imperfect and makes mistakes that humanize God and enable him to develop a deeper bond with his children.
8 Ella Lopez
Originally introduced as quirky and cheerful medical examiner Ella (Aimee Garcia) is known for her cheerful nature, enthusiasm for her work, and strong moral principles that often contrast with the cynicism of her colleagues. Gradually, Ella uncovers a history of struggles with guilt and self-doubt stemming from her connection to a criminal past.
An excellent supporting character in the series, her plot is characterized by moments of introspection as well as various encounters and conversations with celestial beings, especially Lucifer. These interactions give Ella an opportunity to reflect on her morals, faith, and the duality of good and evil. Moreover, as a devout Catholic, her faith is constantly tested, especially when she encounters heavenly beings. However, by the end of the show, she finally finds her footing.
7 Charlotte Richards
Originally introduced as a human lawyer, Charlotte Richards (Trisha Helfer) becomes entangled in the world of celestial beings after her death and subsequent resurrection, and her body is inhabited by the Goddess of Creation, also known as God’s ex-wife. However, after the Goddess leaves her body, Charlotte struggles with her dual personality as she tries to balance the life she lost during the blackout and the one she remembers.
As the show progresses, Charlotte’s story focuses on her journey of self-discovery, redemption, and finding her place in the celestial hierarchy. She strives to make amends for past mistakes and find forgiveness, both from others and from herself. She is willing to put herself in harm’s way to protect those she cares about, demonstrating her transformation from a self-absorbed lawyer to a compassionate and selfless person.
6 Dr. Linda Martin
Introduced in the series as Lucifer’s therapist, Dr. Linda Martin (Rachel Harris) plays a key role in helping the protagonist deal with their emotions and personal problems. She later becomes more involved with celestial issues and helps the other characters on their travels, as well as navigating her own as the show progresses.
As a human being stranded in the world of celestial beings, she manages to cope with the complexities of her friendships and her developing bond with them. Linda learns to set healthy boundaries both personally and professionally by supporting her heavenly clients while maintaining her own emotional well-being. What’s more, becoming a mother to her and Amenadiel’s heavenly son, Charlie, is a vital point of growth for her, one that forces her to face her past, reunite with her long-lost daughter, and embrace motherhood fully.
5 Chloe Decker
A dedicated detective with a strong sense of justice, Chloe (Lauren German) for the first time looks at the world through a purely rational prism. Initially skeptical, Chloe gradually comes to terms with the existence of celestial beings, demons, and divine powers. This understanding expands her worldview and deepens her connection with the celestial characters around her.
Moreover, by forming a romantic connection with Lucifer, Chloe learns to open up to love and let someone into her life. Despite the challenges and difficulties associated with their heavenly nature, Chloe demonstrates her willingness to take emotional risks and put her own happiness first. Chloe’s journey is also explored through motherhood with Trixie and later Rory (Brianna Hildebrand). She combines her duties as a detective and provides her children with a stable and loving environment.
4 Dan Espinoza
Initially introduced as a detective and Chloe Decker’s ex-husband, Dan (Kevin Alejandro) begins the series as a somewhat antagonistic character, often in conflict with Lucifer. However, as the series progresses, Dan’s character changes significantly. He experiences moments of introspection, faces the consequences of his past mistakes, and assumes the infamous title of “dirty cop”.
Moreover, over the course of the series, Dan comes to understand how his choice has affected not only his life, but the lives of those around him, especially his daughter Trixie. This process causes him to confront his own emotions and vulnerabilities, which eventually leads to his personal growth and later gives him a ticket to the Silver City.
3 Mazikin
Presented as Lucifer’s loyal and fierce ally and confidant, Mazikin, or Maze, is initially depicted as a skilled demon warrior who revels in chaos and violence. However, since she is the first demon to ever have a soul grown, her personality changes significantly throughout the show.
As a heavenly being born from hell, Maze initially struggles with understanding and accepting human emotions, empathy, and connections. She later experiences moments of transformation and growth as she seeks to bridge the gap between her demonic nature and her longing for deeper connections. She also wrestles with questions about her origins and her role in the skyworld, often feeling like an outcast. However, as the series progresses, Maze begins to explore other aspects of her existence, choosing different career paths and forming close bonds with the people and celestial beings around her, especially Linda and Trixie.
2 Amenadiel
At first, Amenadiel is portrayed as an obedient angel who carries out the orders of God and serves as a kind of executor of the heavenly law. He initially believes in strict hierarchy and following divine plans. However, its character changes significantly over time. Amenadiel begins to question his beliefs and his roles. He becomes aware of his own desires and aspirations that go beyond serving as an obedient soldier of God, which leads to internal conflicts and a journey of self-discovery.
What’s more, throughout the series, he also explores the concept of love and the complexity of human emotions that he forms with Dr. Linda Martin, allowing him to experience and understand human emotions on a deeper level. He also questions his identity and what it really means to be an angel as he wrestles with his heavenly beginnings and worldly experiences. Thus, in the end, he gains free will and discovers his unique purpose in the world.
1 Lucifer Morningstar
At the start of the series, Lucifer is a rebellious fallen angel who renounces his role as ruler of Hell and settles in Los Angeles. He considers himself the punisher of the sins of mankind and enjoys a carefree and hedonistic lifestyle. When he interacts with the people around him, especially Chloe Decker, he begins to experience a range of emotions that were previously unfamiliar to him. This emotional journey challenges his belief in his own invulnerability and forces him to confront his own personal demons.
In addition, Lucifer seeks to embrace his humanity, learn from his past mistakes, and make amends for the pain he has caused. This desire for redemption leads him to personal growth and causes him to reevaluate his actions and beliefs.
