Nothing compares to a historical epic, and the director Ridley Scott plans to return to the genre with the release Napoleon later this year. As part of Apple’s WWDC 2023 event, an all-new sneak preview of the upcoming movie was revealed, showing Joaquin Phoenix as a titular historical figure who came to power.
While no further details have been provided, the new take on the film depicts Napoleon Bonaparte himself standing on a ship that is likely on a sea voyage to conquer all of Europe. While specific details remain under wraps for now, the film will reportedly focus on Bonaparte’s relationship with Empress Josephine, played by Vanessa Kirby, as he eventually becomes Emperor of the French. With Scott at the helm, viewers are likely to get a brutal take on real-life figures that will at least provide plenty of stunning visuals.
Created by Apple Studios, the movie was originally intended to debut streaming exclusively on Apple TV+. However, plans changed earlier this year after Apple announced that future films would receive the traditional theatrical distribution model, starting at Flower Moon Assassins. Needless to say, seeing Napoleon on the big screen is only to be expected when retelling his epic story, especially with Scott at the helm, who is best known for conveying a grandiose sense of scale in his films. And with a Thanksgiving release date set for later this year in a crowded holiday movie season, Apple is showing full confidence in the upcoming project.
