There is something to love Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Versebut perhaps one of the biggest surprises stored in the movie is the stunningly hilarious and shockingly scary new villain The Spot (Jason Schwartzman). This might raise the question of even the most die-hard comic book fans: Who is in the world of The Spot and why, of all the villains Spider-Man has faced, was he chosen as the next big villain for a feature film?
Spider-Man is easily the Marvel Universe’s equivalent of Batman in the sense that his rogue gallery puts all of his superhero companions to shame. webhead has an incredible collection of bad guys who are way more popular than The Spot. Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Venom, Electro, Vulture, heck, even Big Wheel is more famous than The Spot. However, while The Spot may look like Marvel’s answer to The Polka Dot Man, his role in Through the universes of spiders makes him one of the most dangerous villains Spider-Man has ever faced. Plus, his history in the comics proves he’s no fool either.
The comic story of the spot
Prior to becoming the supervillain known as The Spot, the comic book character was originally known as Jonathon Onn (note that Jonathon has an extra “o” because… you know… the spots). Onn was once a brilliant scientist who attended MIT, even being the roommate of the much more popular Spider-Man villain, Quentin Beck, who would go on to become the deceptive Mysterio. Onn’s brilliant mind was also susceptible to corporate greed and avarice, as he accepted a job offer from crime boss Wilson Fisk without hesitation.
Fisk became interested in the science of teleportation, especially how another New York City superhero, Cloak, could teleport almost anywhere he wanted. Onn’s research eventually opens a pitch-black portal through which the ambitious explorer made the ill-advised decision to enter the mysterious gate. When Onn eventually finds his way out of the portal, the once human scientist becomes something completely different. Many of his anatomical features, such as his face, have disappeared, his skin has become bright white and covered head to toe in black spots, each of which functions as portals to different realities, including his own.
The blotch is often seen as a joke in Marvel comics.
IN Spider-Man: Into the Spider-VerseSpot is often referred to as “villain of the week”, implying that he is a low-level thug rather than a major threat to Marvel heroes. This is how the Blur is often viewed in the original comics, and his first encounter with Spider-Man makes this quite obvious. After gaining his powers from the portal he created and using his supervillain potential, Spot confronts the Spider for the first time. The meeting doesn’t go as planned, as Spider-Man can’t help but laugh at the villain’s stupid name and even more stupid appearance.
Although, Spider-Man may have underestimated his new enemy, as the Blur’s unpredictable abilities proved to be a problem for Spider-Man. The Spot defeats his enemy in their first meeting, but this victory was short-lived. All of his future conflicts with the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man ended in the defeat of the Blur. Since then, despite being a certified super genius, Jonathon Onn has spent most of his supervillain career as a villain for hire, helping Spider-Man’s more established villains with various heists and dastardly plans. That’s not to say that all of Spot’s misadventures were comedic, as he briefly worked as a ruthless vigilante after his son, Wyatt Onn, was caught in a drive-by shooting.
The spot is amazingly powerful
Despite being openly derided by heroes and villains alike, the time the Stain sought revenge for his son showed just how powerful and deadly the character really is. Villain titles may look a little silly, but they are incredibly useful tools for the bad guy. He can remove them when morphing and edit to his liking. Not only can they teleport him long distances, they can even transport the Spot to other dimensions, such as the Negative Zone.
The Blur’s interdimensional abilities also make him one of the few villains who can bypass Spider-Man’s spider-sense, one of the hero’s most reliable defense mechanisms. However, the spots have a disadvantage as they are finite and The Spot has a limited number of them. It’s never clear how The Spot can create more spots in the comics, although they seem to just regenerate over time.
There’s another surprising by-product of Jonathon Onn’s transformation - he’s practically invincible. This character has been killed at least half a dozen times in the comics, but he can always come back. He’s had his neck broken, decapitated, and dismembered in all sorts of horrific ways, but he can come back and cause trouble every time.
The Spot is identified as the nemesis of Miles Morales in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
When Miles MoralesShameik Moore) meets Spot for the first time, the bumbling, opinionated thug seems to be just another bad guy. He is currently trying to steal an ATM machine from a local store and is not very good at it. However, once Miles begins to fight the villain, the Blur leads Spider-Man on a teleportation chase throughout the city. Once the two’s chase ends, Spot discovers the surprising bond he has with the One and Only Spider-Man of New York.
It turns out that this universe’s version of Jonathon Onn was a scientist at Alchemex, the science division owned by Wilson Fisk (Liev Schreiber) and under the supervision of Olivia Octavius (Katherine Hahn) from the first movie. Their testing of the company’s dangerous supercollider began by bringing in lesser creatures, one of which was a radioactive spider from Earth 42 - the same one that bit Miles and gave him powers. Onn was hit by a supercollider after being destroyed by Spider-Man and his friends in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
The disfigured Spot swore revenge on Spider-Man for what he had done. He locates another supercollider on Earth-50101, Spider-Man’s home in India (Karan Soni). Once he uses it, the Blur becomes a being of pure dark energy, capable of destroying entire dimensions with the snap of his fingers. The stain threatens to destroy everything and everyone Miles Morales has ever loved. A terrifying menace that looks set to reach its epic conclusion in the third chapter of the trilogy.
