Original script for Rob SavageX boogeyman gave Vivienne Lyra Blair a toy lightsaber to fight shadow monsters, which would be incredibly fitting considering the young actress played the role of Princess Leia in Obi-Wan Kenobi. In an interview with Collider Perry NemiroffSavage explained how the lightsaber had to be replaced after Disney ran into a problem. boogeyman using star Wars toy.
Based on the iconic short story by Stephen King. boogeyman Blair plays Sawyer, a young girl who becomes a target for the titular monster months after her mother’s death. In the movie, the Boogeyman is the creature that hides in the shadows, which is why Sawyer always keeps a big moon lamp when we see her in the movie trailers. The moon lamp is so iconic that it has become a symbol of the film even before it was released in theaters. However, Savage’s original plan was to use a lightsaber that would malfunction and flicker when a shadow monster was nearby. As the director explains:
“The script was originally written so that Sawyer’s character would have a fake lightsaber that she would hug in bed and then throw out of action during a scene that then turned into a moonball scene. Our office was filled with different lightsaber toys because we needed to find the perfect lightsaber. So during the training, we constantly broke down in lightsaber fights. ”
While it would be fun to see a young princess Leia with a lightsaber, Disney didn’t want to create an unwanted connection between star Wars and a horror movie. So the House of Mouse denied Savage the right to use the toy. Savage tells us:
“I completely forgot that we chose a young princess Leia, and Disney didn’t really like the idea that a young princess Leia had a broken lightsaber that went out of order. It looked like a piece of shit. So they said, no, we can’t do that, and we had to come up with something else very quickly.”

After Savage discovered they couldn’t use the lightsaber that was part of the script, the director and his team had to find another toy. Savage recalls, “The design team just had to google ‘Baby toys that glow’ and we found this moon ball, which turned out to be much better.” It is hard to imagine boogeyman without the moon lamp, which is a key prop for some of the film’s best scenes. So, in the end, Savage thinks that Disney’s ditching the lightsaber actually improved the movie. According to the director:
“We wrote these [moon lamp] frightens literally during the day, and it has become such an integral part of the plot. It’s such a perfect example of a creative turn for the better, where you would never find the best option if you didn’t have to shy away from something you knew completely.”
