As we near the end of our remarkable theatrical run, Universal’s Movie Super Mario Bros. overcame what could be its last major milestone at the box office. The animated video game adaptation has been in theaters around the world for about two months now and has broken numerous box office records in that time. But earlier this week Super Mario achieved his greatest feat since he passed frozen become the second largest animated film of all time at the global box office.
With $560 million in domestic box office and another $727 million from overseas territories. Super Mario has now earned a staggering $1.288 billion worldwide, surpassing frozen$1.284 billion compared to the last decade. If he holds on a little longer, he might actually overtake Incredibles 2$608 million in lifetime to be the biggest animated film of all time at the domestic box office.
In these last two months, Super Mario surpassed every Pixar movie ever released, as well as every DreamWorks movie, every Blue Sky movie, and every Illumination movie. To put things in context, he transcended every entry from a much more authoritative toy story, shrek, despicable Me, Kung Fu Panda And glacial period franchises. And in addition to being the highest-grossing film of the year (by far), Super Mario is also the largest video game adaptation of all time. Director Aaron Horvath And Michael Jelenichthe new animated film received mixed reviews, but managed to appeal to a wide variety of demographics, including young children and their parents.
