Editor’s Note: The following are spoilers for the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel series finale.The Amazing Mrs Maisel Midge Maisel details (Rachel Brosnahan) to rise to fame, sometimes by unreasonable means. Nevertheless, the headstrong comedian was determined to become famous, even if it seemed unattainable. While the fifth season included flashback scenes to show that she succeeded, the series finale needed to explain how to do it. But this was not the only conclusion. As always, the show is filled with Meisel-Weissman family drama. Throughout the series, Midge and Joel (Michael Zegen) struggled to learn how to be co-parents and find the right role in each other’s life after their separation. And by nature, their parents add problems. Midge often argues with her parents as they refuse to accept her career and life choices, a dynamic that has built up throughout the series.
But perhaps the biggest problem the ending had to solve was Midge and Susie (Alex Borstein) complex relationship. The flash forwards showed years of falling out and hinted at a reunion, but as one of the few people Midge would leave in the future, Susie and Midge needed more than an implied reconciliation. With so much information to cover, the final episode moves quickly, making some important points easy to miss. However, he does his best to give each character a satisfying ending.
Midge Maisel’s debut on the Gordon Ford show
Over the course of her career, Midge has received several great opportunities, but she makes bad decisions that hinder her progress. From beating Sophie LennonJane Lynch) to reckless comments about Shai Baldwin (Leroy McClain), Midge herself sabotaged her every big break. In season 5, her goal was to get on Gordon Ford (Reed Scott) show, but a job as the show’s writer thwarted her attempts. Finally, she gets a chance to appear on the air with the help of Hedi (Nina Arianda), Gordon’s wife and Susie’s longtime love. Yet Gordon throws a tantrum because it wasn’t his idea. He gives Midge a stool instead of letting her sit on the guest couch and interviews her about her writing work, cutting abruptly to commercials when she dares to tell a joke.
But Midge has an idea. However, this time she is self-aware, knowing that it could end in disaster. Her hesitation grows as Midge gets Susie’s approval before stealing the microphone, despite Gordon’s wishes. By the end of her 4-minute set, she defeats Gordon, earning a spot on the couch. The guaranteed exposure from this national television performance will boost her career by giving her success in future scenes. Although her career still has to be built, she is on her way to success and her new self-awareness should help her keep that path.
How is The Marvelous Mrs Maisel leaving the rest of the cast?
When the show ends, many threads must be tied. With many colorful characters who need an ending, The Amazing Mrs Maisel I had to quickly figure out my stories. Joel’s parents, Shirley (Caroline Aaron) and Moishe (Kevin Pollack) who have been struggling in their marriage for season 5 are reunited after slipping and must wait for help to arrive. During this time, they discuss it and Moishe agrees to resign, which is why Shirley was angry in the first place. In fact, they completely closed the business, which allowed them to move into a new stage of life. But not all endings are happy. Lenny Bruce (English)Luke Kirby) was virtually absent from the season, but reappears in the finale. After a brief affair with Midge, Lenny left town. When Midge gets Susie to check on him, he’s not in the best place. As one of the few characters based on a real person, Lenny’s story couldn’t possibly have a happy ending, but the show doesn’t reveal much of it. However, Midge’s decision not to see him herself makes his sudden departure permanent and gives the two of them a bad end before Lenny’s death.
Midge’s relationship with her parents was rocky, as they never fully accepted her career. However, AbeTony Shalhoub) realized Midge’s power in the penultimate episode, suggesting his willingness to make things right. Although he has little time in the finale, he shows a commitment to supporting Midge and tries his best to tell her that he is proud of her. This is a pleasant conclusion to their relationship, giving them a better understanding of each other and opening communication. Rose (Marine Hinkle) Midge’s reception is different. Rose has seen her daughter perform in secret or while drunk. Against all odds, Midge wants her mother there, and when she can’t reach Rose, all her contacts try to contact her and tell her about Midge’s performance on The Gordon Ford Show. Rose is touched by the attention. She often felt ignored, and this huge effort was the opposite of that. Feeling noticed, Rose finally accepts Midge’s career, at least for now. So, Midge’s relationship with Rose is finally developing, although not as deeply as she and Abe.
But what about the relationship that started it all? Joel’s decisions sent Midge to Gaslight one night, leading her to a new career path. Since then, they have struggled to find the best way to interact. Joel is shy and in the second season, he couldn’t be with Midge because she was talking about him on stage. However, in the finale, he willingly offers himself as the butt of her live jokes before showing up at the studio to support her. Joel still loves Midge, but he knows he can’t stand in her way. He sits in the hall, meekly accepting Midge’s jokes about himself, leaving them in a good place. Despite lingering unresolved feelings, they have learned to be a part of each other’s lives.
“The Marvelous Mrs Maisel’s Last Time Jump”
When they started working together, Susie did not want to be friends, but Midge got into the life of another woman. Throughout season 5, their friendship is undeniable, but in flash forwards, they no longer get along. It was revealed that their quarrel was related to Joel’s arrest, but the repercussions lasted for many years. There was no on-screen reunion while Midge reached out, but the final minutes of the show prove that their relationship is stronger than ever. In 2005, Midge and older Susie watch the movie Danger together on the phone. Even though they are in different places, this ritual allows them to spend time together and joke like friends. Midge may not have a husband, but she has the support of a friend. This long-term relationship shows that they are the most important people in each other’s lives, and despite the sideshow, their friendship lasts until the very end.
Despite heroic efforts, the ending does not cover all the characters. Although they were created as more important roles in the flash forwards, Midge’s children are absent from the episode. Midge is seen choosing not to joke about her children, but says it’s because people won’t like it when a mother makes fun of her children. However, the ending ends the story of all the others. The series seemed to rotate from seasons focusing on all of Midge’s relationships to focusing on her and Susie at the end. While not a bad choice, the ending didn’t have enough time to do everything it wanted to, giving many characters quick endings. Yet it finally shows that Midge and Susie are reunited and happy. Their friendship has been at the center of attention throughout the series, so it’s only fitting that they get the final minutes of the series.
