Editor’s Note: The following are major spoilers for the Legacy series finale.The final number of shows generates as much anticipation for the series finale as does succession did. After four seasons, showrunner Jesse Armstrong and his team decided to come out on top rather than linger with disappointing late seasons. season 4 succession has been a roller coaster including key business negotiations, corporate turnover, a disastrous presidential election, and the death of Waystar Royco CEO and family patriarch Logan Roy (Brian Cox). The recent series finale ultimately lived up to his high expectations. While many talk about the corrosion of Kendall (Jeremy Strong) Tom’s soul and ascension (Matthew Macfadyen) and Greg (Nicholas Brown) to the throne of Waystar, one emotionally resonant scene is worth exploring as it subtly illustrates the essence of the series.
In the fourth season and series finale “Eyes Open”, all parties enter a race for power and the fate of the Tracking Star as Kendall, Roman (Kieran Culkin) and Shiv (Sara Snook) are doing everything possible to protect their interests in the deal with Gojo. Kendall is determined to take full control of the company and carry the torch of his father’s legacy. As his lust for power intensifies, Roman and Shiv question their brother’s abilities as CEO, and Kendall’s legacy from his father is revealed in the worst possible way.
What is Logan doing in the virtual dinner video?

Virtual dinner depicts an alternative, benevolent side of Logan Roy
The revelation of this virtual dinner is like a dream. Such a calm and warm behavior of these people, especially the evil and merciless Logan Roy, could only exist as part of an alternate universe in succession News feed. Never before has Logan seemed so human and hospitable as in this video throughout the series. It’s not pleasant to see Logan without any desire to give free rein to his killer instinct or at least smile wholesomely. The video was filmed just a few weeks ago amid a corporate standoff between him and his children. The person depicted on the screen, whom Roy’s children watch lovingly, does not hold an ounce of vitriol towards anyone, nor does he seem determined to take revenge on any enemies. He looks like a happy, retired old man. The video exists in the uncanny valley.
For Kendall, Roman, Shiv and Connor, this performance as the last shots of their father is very touching. They are supposed to be flooded with positive memories as the room is mostly quiet as they gather to watch the virtual dinner. Shiv quickly recognizes a sort of monologue of Logan losing the election. The glee on Shiv’s face suggests that she has come to terms with remembering her father as an evil antagonist. “I can’t believe he can still do this,” she remarks about his ability to repeat his campaign passage, but it can also refer to being surprised when he finds out he still has a heart. As the video progresses, Kendall and Roman’s emotional vulnerability is revealed. The three kneel on the ground and watch as Logan assumes the form of a sweet and gentle father. Each of them has tears in their eyes. Without saying a word, they take comfort in seeing Logan in such a cheerful state. He may leave, but his untapped goodwill remains in the spirit, thanks to a virtual dinner and his children’s memories.
Video has tragic consequences for Roy’s siblings
The revelation of the virtual dinner is not just an episode that complements the close bond between the Swarms with a strong emotional connection. Despite its brevity, this scene demonstrates the pathos of Roy’s children and their complex and often strained relationship with their father. Secretly, the most poignant observation about this virtual dinner is that Kendall, Roman, and Shiv weren’t present. Paradoxically, the moment meant to bring Logan and his kids closer doesn’t include all sides. This realization instantly leaves this touching moment with an unpleasant aftertaste - deliberately so, demonstrating the toxicity that permeated the family.
The truth is that Logan was incapable of being anything other than a ruthless capitalist tycoon in front of his children. Kendall, Roman and Shiv were not his children. They were his competitors. The brothers and sisters reciprocated as a result of raising ruthless business leaders. Learning about the harsh reality that Logan has limited himself to basic humanity towards his children further exacerbates the long-standing problem that would surround Roy’s siblings if they were at the helm of Waystar. They all desperately needed the love and approval of their father. As Roman’s breakdown at Logan’s funeral in the penultimate episode showed, there was an unresolved emotional wound between the siblings. The moment Connor shows his siblings this dainty Logan Roy time capsule, the immeasurable distance from ever having a loving father grows exponentially.
Continuation of the family legacy is at the heart of the theme succession since the premiere. For Roy’s three siblings, though the temptations of different lifestyles and worries about running a media empire are in the air, fate forces them to carry the honor of their father. They have no choice because they were raised like wolves to be free from sentimentality and affection. As the following events in the final episode show, the siblings will cause irreversible damage to family relationships in order to be like their father. The virtual dinner scene, which is a triumph of the characters’ brilliant work, is a sobering confrontation of Roy’s tragic family dynamics for viewers and the show’s central figures. The sequence is purely based on emotion, preferring to evoke quiet sadness rather than creating overt drama through dialogue. Eventually, Kendall, Roman, and Shiv will be trapped under the menacing shadow of Logan Roy, but never experience the soft comfort of this virtual dinner.
