Editor’s Note: The following are spoilers for the series finale, Legacy.One of the most popular HBO series. succession, came to an end after an amazing four-season run tonight, and there were quite a few loose ends to tie up - not just for the many character arcs and storylines this season, but for the entire Roy family. long and rough journey. The fourth season revolved around the sale of Waystar to Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgard) and GoJo, along with the unexpected death of the domineering and impossibly large patriarch of the family, Logan Roy (Brian Cox). But during the last season, several storylines developed that also needed to be closed, including the story of Shiv (Sarah Snook) pregnancy, the betrayal of her brothers, and the status of her love/hate relationship with husband Tom Wambsgans (Matthew Macfadyen). Also in the game was a suddenly shaken foundation around the CE-Bros Kendall alliance (Jeremy Strong) and Roman (Kieran Culkin), who joined forces on behalf of their late father in the sale/merger of the family company.
What’s going on with the Waystar-GoJo deal?
As the penultimate episode concluded last week, Kendall was in the process of secretly creating his own small clique of associates and preparing to move forward in the face of his suddenly emotional and floundering younger brother Roman, who was punched in the face by reality. his father’s death and experiences a combination of grief and feelings of inadequacy. His breakdown paved the way for Kendall to become the complete Logan in his relationship with Matsson. Shiv is also looking to capitalize on a unique partnership with Matsson to become the US CEO of the recently merged GoJo/Waystar Royco multimedia conglomerate.
As we see at the beginning of the finale, Kendall is struggling to get enough votes from the Board of Directors to derail the planned merger with GoJo, and the tension is very high. Meanwhile, Shiv is fully supportive of Team GoJo, she has been promised the position of CEO, so she is also trying to gather votes to move the deal forward as planned. Emotionally “fragile” and vulnerable Roman is now a voice that can be obtained in any case by running away home to his mother Caroline (Harriet Walter) after stress cracking. Kendall, Shiv, and Roman meet at the summit in the form of sunset cocktails on the patio and a family dinner at the house, with each sibling presenting their case for Roman’s overriding vote. The point of the ending is to see Roy’s kids finally drop all pretense with each other and enjoy each other’s company.
Tom is able to betray Shiva (again)
The relationship between Shiv and Tom for most of successionfour seasons. Leading up to the finale, it was colder than ever, as the two proved to be too venomous for each other. Unfortunately, the relationship falls apart once Shiv gets pregnant by the couple, adding a whole new dimension to the disagreement. The two start the finale with Shiv trying to extend an olive branch to Tom and hatching the idea of them getting back together, but Mr. Wambsgans is understandably a little apprehensive and wary of Shiv’s ulterior motives. He also forces himself on Lukas Matsson to stay if the GoJo deal goes through. Matsson pelts Tom with a massive curveball, offering him the job of CEO instead of Shiv. Tom, the accomplice, has never been so full of assertions about everything his would-be boss throws out, and doesn’t seem to have much trouble with a new potential deal if that means he has a job.
Greg’s journey culminates in a wealth of information
How the fourth season finally saw GregNicholas Brown) stumbles and stutters his way to a significant but still very clumsy part of the Waystar family, the ending shows him still in a vulnerable position and making himself available as Tom’s resonator/punching bag. After learning a new plan from Matsson, Tom starts pushing the gullible young Greg, telling him that he might be able to “keep it” but with a significant pay cut. But Greg is one step ahead of Tom and informs Kendall of Matsson’s willingness to drop Shiv as CEO in favor of a more obedient and experienced candidate. And just like that, Roy’s kids and Greg form a single foursome to wreck the deal - and it was Greg who had the information. Who would have thought?
The Greybeards have their last word
They’ve been called anything from “tribal elders” to “greybeards” in a difficult last season, but Jerry (J. Cameron Smith), Carl (David Rache) and Frank (Peter Friedman) have more than proven themselves as the liaison between Roy’s children and the Waystar board of directors. They refused to be pushed aside and even took some liberties in the disrespectful and irreverent behavior of junior heirs to the throne now that Logan no longer looms over their shoulders. Carl gave Kendall a piece of his mind, while Jerry’s attitude towards the boss girl in his relationship with Roman likely contributed to his whimpering breakdown. When Roman sees her in the finale, he has a panic attack and breaks down again. His shit is finally coming to the surface, and the façade of his eloquent Machiavellian snobbery gives way to the realization that he’s not mentally strong enough for the top job, but senior colleagues hold their own and vote yes. a deal that would allow them all to retire with a huge financial package.
Explanation of the final scenes
Once it is absolutely clear that the Swarms must rally around each other and nominate a single candidate as the successor to the Waystar crown, the game will begin. Kendall makes a strong case for “not primetime-ready” Roman or recently fired future CEO Shiv. And, perhaps as a fait accompli of the various king makers shenanigans throughout the entire four-season run, Kendall becomes a candidate for Roy’s team spokesperson. The point of the ending is to see Roy’s kids finally drop all pretense with each other and enjoy each other’s company, laughing and being real with each other, maybe for the first time. The three meet with Connor (Alan Ruck) and Will (Justine Lupe) and hide in Logan’s penthouse to strategize and watch some funny old home videos of their father and the “Greybeards” enjoying lighter moments together. As they watch the video, there is a touching family atmosphere and silence in the room as the kids spend warm moments together watching Logan sing the tune until Tom shows up and tells Shiv that Matsson chose him over her as CEO. and then hell begins.
Royce is at the table for a meeting along with the Board of Directors, and Roy puts forward his arguments against the deal. Frank proposes that the board should go straight to the vote. The camera pans around the table each time you vote for or against a GoJo deal. When all the votes fall as planned and they reach Shiv with the deciding vote, Shiv panics and exits the conference room. Kendall and Roman talk to Shiv and she reveals that she is now hesitating with her vote to screw up Matsson and the GoJo deal. Eventually Shiv says he doesn’t think Kendall is right for the job. She even mentions the fact that Kendall is actually a killer, referring to the Season 3 finale when he confessed to killing someone and can’t be the “boyfriend” for the job. Kendall absolutely loses his temper and yells at Shiv and physically attacks Roman. This is a tantrum of the highest order, suitable for a five-year-old child. When Frank confirms that the GoJo deal is moving forward thanks to Shiv’s vote, dark Kendall returns and is in a stupor of disbelief. After the vote, Tom enters and starts making decisions about who he plans to keep as Waystar’s new CEO, even reconciling with Greg. Tom, Carl and Frank pose for pictures next to Matsson as new GoJo management and applause erupts.
Roman quickly signs a deal with Matsson and drinks a strong drink afterward. Tom and Shiv reunite in the back seat of a black SUV and join hands, refusing to look at each other - and finally, Kendall plods along to the ocean with her father’s former bodyguard Colin (Scott Nicholson) follows behind. He sits on a nearby bench and looks despondent as he looks out over the water as the camera rolls up the latest profile shot. What resonates most is that everything in Kendall’s life leading up to this last moment meant nothing. He’s lost his wife, his kids, his self-confidence, and now his father’s company - and it’s an abrupt blackout and the end credits end the wild and exciting ride that succession gives the audience since 2018.
