Netflix filmed all six episodes Queen Charlotte: The Bridgerton Story earlier this month and what followed was a flood of tears and applause for what turned out to be a brilliant masterpiece. The show chronicles the tumultuous engagement and wedding of Princess Charlotte—later Queen Charlotte—(India Amarteifio) and the emotionally broken and troubled King George (Corey Milkchrist). From the very beginning, the couple, despite clear sparks and signs of attraction between them, their relationship fluctuates greatly and almost collapses on a number of occasions, if not for the firm hands of the queen’s devoted royal servant, Brimsley (Sam Clemmet) and royal valet Reynolds (Freddie Dennis).
While the intense romance between the king and queen eventually escalated and culminated in a tearful finale, Reynolds and Brimsley were its keepers from behind the scenes. While the couple stoked the flames of affection for their lord and mistress, they also fondly nurtured their own nascent romance. Their relationship marked the first queer relationship introduced into the world. Bridgerton and the audience seemed to like it very much.
The romance between Reynolds and Brimsley contrasted with what we saw between the king and queen, their romance was more relaxed. In the series finale, the couple shared a lap dance, which soon moved on to the older Brimsley (Hugh Sachs) dancing alone. This raised questions about Reynolds’ whereabouts, hinting at a love that lasted for years. Tom Vericawho directs the entire season, recently discussed the future of this novel in a conversation with TVLine, saying:
“We don’t know where it will go. But this, of course, touched the nerve of many viewers, since [did] with me when I filmed it, and our discussions with the actors about where it would go. We don’t know exactly what happened, but there are several different options. Playing these scenes, especially when [Brimsley] danced alone, we discussed it and we tried a few different ways, our own theories as to what happened to their relationship or what happened to Brimsley. So much of this is now unknown. I think Shonda knows. She didn’t share it.”
What’s next Bridgerton?
The introduction of queer romance is certainly seen as a huge step for Bridgerton The universe and the show’s third season could be a good place to expand. The third season of the Netflix series will feature a growing romance between Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton). Jess Brownel came to replace Chris Van Dusen as a writer and showrunner for the upcoming seasons, and it will be interesting to see the series’ future direction.
