The team takes on a new challenge as an operations analyst for a global cybersecurity firm, whose role is played by Zach Gilfordcreated a network of serial killers. The team then must track down each killer through a series of murder cases.

The revival became known a year after the end of the original series. The series is set three years after the end of the original series, with Agent Prentiss becoming Section Chief and Rossi taking on his former role as team leader. Although this is not the only change in the series, as the overall template of the program has changed to a more immersive plot structure. The series now combines regular weekly cases with a longer running main theme, similar to the old Hotchner vs. Reaper arc, but more elaborate.
