Topic, the broadcast home of international thrillers, mysteries, dramas and documentaries, offers a new destination for watching ITV thriller series, Angela Black. Starring downton abbey alum Joanne Froggattthriller follows an titular mother of two who is stuck in a relationship with her abusive husband with dark secrets to play with Game of Thrones actor Michiel Huisman. Collider can exclusively share a new trailer for the series ahead of Topic’s premiere, which showcases the duality of Angela’s life - perfect on the outside, but a terrible story behind closed doors.
The first shots of Olivier Heisman make viewers believe that he is the perfect husband. Their children love him, he is a gracious host and loves Angela. However, as soon as they are alone, there is malice in his voice when he talks to her. Kindness is a front to cover up Angela’s abuse, but there’s something more sinister that he’s hiding. He hires private investigator Ed Harrison (Samuel Adewunmi) to follow Angela, though this backfires when Ed starts offering information about Olivier, including that he wants full custody of the children. The murder seems to be on Olivier’s resume too. Not only was it hinted that he killed the woman, presumably a former partner, but he also ordered Ed to get rid of Angela. Angela’s only option is to team up with Ed to defeat Olivier by any means necessary.
Relinquishing the role of a husband desperately trying to save his wife in Echo 3, Huisman is equal parts menacing and enigmatic in the footage as he plays with Angela’s head. While Olivier’s heinous actions are largely under wraps, it’s clear that he’s capable of truly terrible things. Later clips imply that he may even be willing to harm his own children, much to Angela’s dismay. All of this is to let the imagination run wild, playing a disturbing mystery that is revealed as she struggles to survive.
Angela Black Plays with the imagination, keeping the violence behind the scenes
Creative team behind Angela Black tried not to show on the screen gratuitous violence against women in the depiction of abusive relationships. “We tried to lighten the subject while also providing entertainment that is a very nerve-wracking thriller, but we also wanted to be very sensitive about how we handled it.” Froggatt spoke about the abuse images in a previous interview with Collider’s own. Christina Reddish. “As you said, the imagination can be even more cruel than the visual. I feel like it was important to have that scene so that the audience could have a very visceral experience in their own minds of what Angela goes through on a day-to-day basis, but no one was ever going to make that what the show was about.”
Harry and Jack Williams created and directed the series which premiered on 10 October 2021 on ITV in his native UK and received strong critical acclaim. The duo are co-founders of Two Brothers Pictures, which has produced such well-known series as Rubbishbut after their thriller they went on to write another hit in Tourist. Season 2 Jamie DornanThe series recently began filming in Dublin as it looks to expand on its acclaimed first season.
