Fewer natural places in America can be as surprising and awe-inspiring as the Southwest. Known for its towering red cliffs, natural arches and bridges, this place has served as inspiration for many old Western films over the years. And while Wes Anderson filmed principal photography for his upcoming feature film asteroid city primarily in Madrid, the first poster of the film leans heavily towards the atmosphere of the American Southwest.
Like a postcard from a national park visitor center, the eye-catching animated poster captures stunning contrasts between muted sand and jutting orange cliffs against a blue sky with rolling clouds hovering above. The landscape is adorned with saguaro cacti, and a straight road lined with telephone poles stretches as far as the eye can see. In the distance, the landscape is complemented by even more massive hills and hills. Against the background of magnificent landscapes, we see a welcome sign marking the border of the fictional titular city. As in the surrounding area, the sign shows off magnificent red rocks, but there is a hole the size of a crater in the front and center. On the side of the poster is a list of the actors of the film with such mega-names as Bryan Cranston, Scarlett JohanssonAnd Tom Hanks.
While not much is known about the film’s plot, we can expect Anderson to be Anderson, playing out his style from the many symmetrically shot shots that in turn give the project a dreamlike feel. As for the synopsis, we know that the film, described as “a poetic reflection on the meaning of life,” will take viewers to a fictional American desert city in 1955, where students and parents from all over the country come to celebrate the dark skies and bright stars during congress of young astrologers. It’s due in theaters on June 16, 2023 and we’ll know more about the storyline soon as the trailer is due out tomorrow.
