Director Todd Field received a wave of industry awards for his psychological drama film. Tar, including six Academy Award nominations and more “Best Picture” critical reviews than any other feature film in 2022. However, Field has now said that the film could be his last in the director’s chair.

In a new interview with Cinema Scope, Field said: “Creating a film of any size is a real challenge. It’s not for the faint of heart,” adding, “I wish I had been cut out for other things because I probably wouldn’t make more films. It takes a lot of effort to make a film; I don’t know if I’ll ever make another one.” When asked by the publication if he was serious about stepping away from the camera, Field replied: “Yes, I think so. I haven’t thought about it until now. It’s very likely.” Although he left the door open to “maybe” change his mind, Field explained in detail why he was hesitant to take on another directorial project, although he expressed his enthusiasm to continue writing:

“For me, it’s not a creative thing, it’s more of a physical thing. I spent a year working daily with Justin Klawans Jonathan Franzen, and in six months we wrote 1200 pages together. It was as exciting as anything I’ve had in terms of the thrill of freedom of expression and I look forward to being in the room with John again. The writing part, going to the desk every day, that’s not going to change.”

Field went on to describe his reluctance to continue directing into old age:

“It’s not that I have nothing to say. If it was nice and easy, I would shoot all the time. I do commercials all the time, but it doesn’t take much from me. experiment with new hardware that comes out before it even hits the feature world, because deep down I’m a techie too. But it’s not mine, these technical tools belong to multinational corporations… you understand how valuable time is, there is not much of it in this hourglass.

Starring Cate Blanchett as conductor Lydia Tar, accused of sexual harassment, Tar was Field’s first film in 16 years. The film appears to have been something of a passion project for Field, as he told Cinema Scope that he had been trying to get something to work with the character for ten years. “This character has haunted me for 10 years or more,” he said. “At various times I sat with this character and wondered if there was anything I could do with him. Everything I’ve written since 2005 has involved adaptations of existing work… but this character has always teased me on my shoulder or while standing. on my desk.”

In what may have been a preview of his departure from directing, Field recently left the Hulu crime drama series. Devil in the White City just a few days after the departure of the star Keanu Reeves. Bye Leonardo DiCaprio And Martin Scorsese were still on board to produce, Field’s departure was likely the final nail in the coffin for the series, which has since been scrapped by Hulu.
