This article contains spoilers for The Last of Us Season 1 Episode 4 Please Hold My Hand.
Last of us Episode 4, “Please Hold My Hand”, deviated from the games, landing Joel and Ellie in Kansas City and leading the duo straight into an ambush. The episode introduces new characters in the form of a rebel group that managed to overthrow FEDRA in this particular QZ. By the end of the episode, we learn that they are after the iconic playable characters Henry and Sam. We meet KathleenMelanie Lynskey) and Perry (Geoffrey Pierce), the people who control the rebel group. In a new interview, Vulture Pierce, who previously voiced Joel’s brother Tommy in the games, shed some light on the new characters.
Kathleen and Perry are completely new characters that the creators Craig Mazin And Neil Druckmann added to the series. In games, we don’t spend a lot of time on NPC stories outside of Joel and Ellie’s personal connections, so it’s great to see these new additions that add to the IP. Speaking about his character, Pierce says that “there’s a lot more to be revealed in terms of who he is.”
He goes on to explain that “Perry has a lot to do with the themes that exist on the show”, as we saw in the relationship between Joel and Ellie and Bill and Frank, which is “the idea of finding your purpose in this new world. He adds that Mazin’s script emphasized that he might have been in the military, and Pierce used that in his characterization: “This guy was a pro before the outbreak and then was able to use those skills when he kind of wandered around and then found own. target with Kathleen and fight with FEDRA”.
Although in the episode we see, Perry is the only one who can speak to Kathleen with any authority. They also hide a secret that will sooner or later be revealed. Pierce explains: “I think he is the only person who can ask her questions because he is an expert in his field. But this fidelity is also covered by his love and affection for her. We can make bad decisions when it comes to love and I think that’s one of the topics. Last of us“. Regarding the character of Kathleen, he explains that she is “driven by what I think is reasonable” and “an extreme desire for revenge”. Though he cautions against thinking of her as a villain as it takes away all the “shades of gray that exist in the situation”. He adds”
“As more and more is revealed about what happened, I think one of the great things Neal and Craig do is they ask the audience, ‘What do you think you would do? What is the right decision, what is the moral decision, what is the philosophical decision, and then what practical decision would you make as a person? Would you choose revenge or not? I think it’s an interesting and powerful story to tell and make the audience ask, “OK, who’s the villain here, and who’s the good guy?”
Last of us Episode 5 will air on Friday, February 10, leading up to the Super Bowl. You can watch the trailer below:
