A prequel is in development that tells the origin story of a budding serial killer. Based on a series of crime novels by Jeff Lindsay. dexter debuted in 2006 and starred Michael S. Hall like Dexter Morgan, a Miami forensic scientist who channeled his uncontrollable homicidal drive into killing the city’s numerous serial killers while staying one step ahead of his fellow cops and his adopted sister. The series ended in 2013, after eight seasons, with a widely criticized finale in which Morgan’s sister died and the so-called “Bay Harbor Butcher” fled Miami to live the anonymous life of a lumberjack.

The series was revived last year with Dexter: New Bloodin which Morgan’s former life caught up with him in the form of his long-lost son Harrison (Jack Alcott); at the end of the series, Dexter died at the hands of his son. New blood was Showtime’s most watched series of all time, averaging eight million viewers per episode. It was enough that a second season, purportedly focused on Harrison, was considered, but it was canceled to make room for other spin-offs planned by Showtime.
