Dexter Morgan may be dead, but dexter, franchise, will live. Showtime has a number dexter spin-offs in development, including a prequel. The Hollywood Reporter reports that despite the cancellation of the sequel last week Dexter: New Blood, dexter The franchise will play a major role in the future of Showtime, which has just merged with sister company Paramount+.
A prequel is in development that tells the origin story of a budding serial killer. As seen in various flashbacks in the original series, he revolved around Dexter’s adoptive father, Police Detective Harry Morgan (James Remar), teaching him to use his serial-killing instincts for a twisted version of good instead of evil. Also in the plans of the network are spin-offs dedicated to the origin of the famous serial killers who fell into Dexter’s orbit during the course of the series. This includes Arthur Mitchell, the Trinity Killer, a seemingly mild-mannered family man who leads a double life as one of America’s most prolific serial killers. Unforgettably depicted John Lithgow in the show’s fourth season, for an Emmy-winning performance, Mitchell is widely considered Dexter’s best enemy.
Based on a series of crime novels by Jeff Lindsay. dexter debuted in 2006 and starred Michael S. Hall like Dexter Morgan, a Miami forensic scientist who channeled his uncontrollable homicidal drive into killing the city’s numerous serial killers while staying one step ahead of his fellow cops and his adopted sister. The series ended in 2013, after eight seasons, with a widely criticized finale in which Morgan’s sister died and the so-called “Bay Harbor Butcher” fled Miami to live the anonymous life of a lumberjack.
The series was revived last year with Dexter: New Bloodin which Morgan’s former life caught up with him in the form of his long-lost son Harrison (Jack Alcott); at the end of the series, Dexter died at the hands of his son. New blood was Showtime’s most watched series of all time, averaging eight million viewers per episode. It was enough that a second season, purportedly focused on Harrison, was considered, but it was canceled to make room for other spin-offs planned by Showtime.
Dexter spin-offs will be controlled Clyde Phillipswho was showrunner for the first four seasons dexter and returned to production Dexter: New Blood. He previously expressed regret over how the series ended after his departure.
