On our first two trips to Pandora, Avatar viewers saw the cruel side of humanity - greed, self-interest, violence and profit above all else. The purity of life was shown through the natives of the planet - the Na’vi. In 2009, we met the Na’vi while living in the Omaticaya Forest. Avatarand in 2022 Avatar: Path of Water saw the introduction of the Metkayina, a tribe living in the coastal regions of Pandora.
In the movie Jake SullySam Worthington) and his family flee the forests to the oceans in search of refuge from the peaceful ocean tribes, but now, the director James Cameron hinted that in the third installment of his multi-billion dollar franchise, we’ll be introduced to the darker side of the Na’vi - the planet’s fire-wielding inhabitants, whom he calls the “ash people.” Speaking to French publication 20 Minutes, Cameron said that we can expect to see “different cultures” from all over the planet.
Fire will be represented by the “ash people”. I want to show the Na’vi from a different angle, because so far I’ve only shown their good side. There are very negative human examples and very positive Na’vi examples in the early films. In Avatar 3, we will do the opposite. We will also explore new worlds, continuing the story of the main characters. I can say that the last parts will be the best. The rest were introductions, a way of setting the table before serving food. But obviously it will all depend on how Avatar 2 is received if it finds its audience.”
Avatar 3 almost complete, and the cast will be joined by Michelle Yeoh, Oona Chaplin and David Thewlis. Yeoh will play human scientist Dr. Karina Maug, Chaplin will play Varang, a Na’vi, and Thewlis will play an unnamed Na’vi character who will possibly play one of the nefarious Ash People.
