What popular Netflix dark comedies do Wednesday and longtime The CW superhero series Smallville is there a common thing? Well, if you look closely at the credits, you will realize that both series are created by the same two authors: Al Gough and Miles Millar. 21 years after creating the hit show that helped change how we perceive television, the duo have managed to create another hit series that we can’t put down - and they have a lot in common.
Of course, both series take place during the teenage years of two iconic characters who were popular long before their youth was chronicled. But in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the showrunner duo revealed that there are more connections between Wednesday and Clark Kent than meets the eye. Millar explained in detail what those connections were:
“Wednesday seems like a one note character and I have always found Clark Kent to be a one note character. He’s just good, good, and Wednesday is just a snarky kid. So how do you, as a writer, take these characters - kind of extreme, by the way - and then make them feel human? I think that was indeed our goal. The goal of any writer is to create characters that feel human and real and have emotional complexity. What an exciting journey you start to develop these stories and think about how they came to be. [the people they became]? In Clark’s case, how did he get to where he is, just a superhero doing good for the world in every way? And then on Wednesday, the journey there, we don’t know where it will lead. Nobody has ever seen an adult environment. So it’s really exciting in terms of what we can tell this story. How does she evolve into a woman, and how to do it without dissolving the essence of the environment? Her streak of change, you never want to change too much on a Wednesday. You want her to evolve, but she’s a very special person and we never want to change that.”
Both Wednesday and Smallville Take characters from ten years ago and tell stories that have never been explored
Co-showrunner Gough also explained that over the years, viewers and readers have simply associated Clark Kent and Wednesday with certain aspects and personality traits that have never been questioned. He commented that applying his creativity to try and explore how these characters became who they are is practically a writer’s dream project:
“Because there are so many things that are just given, like with Clark Kent. It’s just like, he’s a good person. He grew up in a small town. He wears glasses and no one recognizes him. It’s just like all these things that are just given. As if everyone had been told this a long time ago, and no one had ever kicked a tire. And I think it’s the same with the environment. She is in a certain way. But it is interesting to ask: “Well, why are these people like that? What makes them tick? And how can you tell chapters that no one has told before? Part of that is also that as a storyteller you are always looking for a story that no one has told before. And I mean, in Superman, thousands of comics, and many, many years before Smallville, no one ever talked about this chapter of Clark Kent’s life. So for us it was just great.”
