Bad news came today for another favorite of Netflix fans when Illegitimate son and the devil himself creator Joe Barton took to Twitter to announce that the magical and mystical show has been cancelled. Those who enjoyed the story are bound to be shocked as the first season of the book-turned-series was met with rave reviews and is currently on Rotten Tomatoes with a 93% critics rating and a 92% viewers rating. But even his amazing results couldn’t save the eight-episode series, which aired on October 28.
In his post, Barton, who is also known for creating the British crime show Geary/Hadji as well as sci-fi series Project Lazarconfirms rumor that Netflix has dropped Illegitimate son and the devil himself from your list of programs. He said he was “very proud of it” and happily teamed up with the cast and crew to introduce it to viewers via streamer. His only regret was that he was not given the opportunity to continue the adventure, and he told the fans, “I’m sorry I couldn’t finish the story.”
The series centers around 16-year-old Nathan Byrne (Jay Lycurgo), a teenager who finds it increasingly difficult to control his magical abilities. While the other witches in his world are either Fairborn witches or Blood witches, Nathan is the child of a Fairborn witch and Marcus Edge (David Gyasi), the darkest and most sinister of all Blood Witches. Not knowing what kind of witch the boy would grow up to be, the good guys at Fairborn Council kept a close eye on Nathan, testing him throughout his young life for any signs of evil making its way to the surface. As expected, Nathan’s dark powers begin to manifest, leaving the teen with no choice but to go on a quest to save himself from the demons within that threaten to tear him apart.
This is a story about self-discovery, accepting all of your sides - both good and bad - and creating your own family to support you in difficult times. There is also a love story across the triangle between Nathan and his friends, fellow travelers and fellow witches: Annalize O’Brien (Nadia Parks) and Gabriel (Emilien Vekemans). As the trio’s story of passion and heartbreak unfolds, the cute weird love story at its core is another thing that makes this show so special.
The only good news for those who loved the Netflix show and are itching to discover the next chapter in history is that the production was based on the YA book series by Sally Green. To keep the magic going, viewers can watch Green’s trilogy and find out what’s going on with Nathan and the rest of the characters in the story.
