Rejoice horror lovers, for David Cronenberga mind-blowing world first introduced to us in an 80s classic Scanners is being reimagined as the series that will be the home of HBO Max. The series has been in development for over five years and is now close to seeing the light of day, with a huge production team gathered to bring the project to life. Everything seems set and ready for a return to the world of psychics with the ability to blow heads at the speed of thought.
The original sci-fi horror film was set in a world filled with telepathic scanners pitted against each other in a seeming struggle between good and evil. He starred Stephen Lack, Jennifer O’Neillas well as Michael Ironside and despite initially being met with lukewarm reviews, Scanners would eventually become a cult classic, bringing screenwriter/director Cronenberg international fame and earning him the well-deserved title of master of body horror.
According to the official synopsis of the ongoing series, it seems that the scanners will remain the antagonists this time around. They are described as “ruthless agents with unimaginable powers” who hunt down “two women living in the margins of modern society” that the series focuses on. The women “must learn to work together to overthrow the vast conspiracy determined to bring them to their knees.”
Scanners has since grown into a standalone universe with two sequels and two spin-offs. However, unlike other similar well-known works of the time, its growth stopped in the 90s. Several attempts have been made in the past to either remake the film or adapt it for a TV series, but so far none have been successful. The last attempt to return to the world of scanners was made by Media Res in September 2017, and now, with these latest developments, it seems that success is close to success. Emmy winner William Bridges (Black mirror, very strange things) will be the writer and showrunner of the series, and Jan Demange (Lovecraft Country, White boy Rick) will lead. Among the executive producers are Ellenberg and his colleague from Media Res. Lindsey Springerthere is also Wayward Films Meredith Duff as well as Sarah Sullivan. Other executive producers include Rene and Fanny-Laure Malo, Pierre David, clark peterson, as well as Aaron Gilbert.
