For years, our televisions have been missing new shows set in the world Star Trek — fortunately, thanks to Paramount+ (formerly known as CBS All Access), things are very different. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds debuted in 2022, gaining fans almost immediately. Animated caster Star Trek: Lower Decks the third season is on Star Trek: Discovery returns for a fifth season. Star Trek: Prodigy it is the franchise’s first children’s series, and Picard Season 3 to feature main cast Star Trek: The Next Generation reunion on screen once again.

But just because we’re living in the All the Way All Time era doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy great sci-fi adventures outside of the United Federation of Planets. Series set in space have always existed, although some of them have been forgotten. The shows on this list have vastly different tone and production values, and every viewer will have their favorites. If you love Star Trek, or episodic adventures in space, you can watch these shows between seasons.

Farscape (1999-2003)

An astronaut from Earth finds himself aboard a living Moya spaceship as the ship and its crew try to escape a fascist military operation known as the Peacekeepers. Farscape aired in the early 2000s in an attempt to capture an audience that was losing interest in Star Trekbut unlike Star Trek the central team is not always honest citizens. The main character is John Crichton.Ben Browder), is a great audience replacement, with his pop culture cues and light-hearted air about him making him appealing. His ideal match turns out to be Irene Sun, played by Claudia Black, a no-nonsense ex-soldier who develops into a compassionate character by the end of the series. Their dynamics are a big attraction of the show, as are the visuals and animatronics that bring this sci-fi universe to life.

Babylon 5 (1993-1999)

The action of the space opera takes place aboard the titular space station. Babylon 5 focuses on what happens when humans and aliens must work together to bring peace to a galaxy that is still learning about diplomacy. Babylon 5 makes no bones about the horrors of war and the losses it takes, while the show even touches on the darker aspects of humanity with storylines involving xenophobic groups as well as political and religious influences. Parts of the show echo the atmosphere deep space ninenot only with the space station setting (there was some controversy over how similar the settings were), but also with a demonstration of how large-scale galactic events can affect the most ordinary people.

Stargate (1997-2011)

Star Gates is an extensive show franchise based on Roland Emmerich film from Stargate SG-1, which debuted in the late 1990s and remains a favorite among fans of the genre. More recent shows have been added to the franchise’s canon - the main premise revolves around the opening of the “Stargate” by Earth, which is a space portal that can ferry people over vast distances. Of course, the humans decide to use this discovery for potential resources, causing humanity to fight the aliens, especially the serpentine Goa’uld. Star Gates it’s hard for sci-fi fans to immerse themselves in the story, but more importantly, the show serves as a “comfortable viewing” with funny and likable characters.

Dark Matter (2015-2017)

In the future, six people wake up on a spaceship, not knowing who they are or how they got there. They have to work together to find out the truth, but how can they trust each other? Based on the comic book of the same name, one of the most comparable aspects Dark matter to Star Trek this is an android introduction (Zoe Palmer), a character who is the smartest person in the room but knows little about human communication. Although the show was canceled after just three seasons, it did develop a loyal fan base thanks to its combination of humor and darkness, a diverse cast, and a seemingly ubiquitous villain. If you are Trekky, Battlestar Galactica has most likely been on your watchlist for a while. The 1970s reboot of the show takes place aboard the titular spaceship that leads the fleet with the last remaining humans in the universe. Admiral Adama (Edward James Olmos) oversees a team of fan-favorite characters such as Katee SackhoffStarbuck and Jamie BamberApollo, among others, along with newly appointed President Laura Roslin (two-time Oscar nominee). Mary McDonnell). Adama has a purpose, but his hopes may be dashed as the fleet takes on an old foe in a new form. The Cylons, like the Borg, are cunning and ruthless. Worse, the Cylons in the reboot can look like humans, so credibility is at a premium on the show. Some storylines and character arcs in the series were controversial up until the series finale, but Battlestar Galactica continues to be thought provoking, and the characters will easily become some of your favorites.

Lost in Space (2018-2021)

For fans of space and exploration, this is a 2018 reboot. Lost in space (yes, another reboot!) will be right in your path. The show follows the Robinson family, Molly (Maureen Robinson), John (Toby Stephens) and their three children, aspiring doctor Judy (Taylor Russell), an aspiring writer Penny (Mina Sandwall), and science enthusiast Will (Maxwell Jenkins) when they travel into space. The Robinsons face several obstacles in space - from the environment, alien species, robots, and even their own kind - but always find a way to overcome them. As long as this family is together, they can overcome anything. Although they need a lot of help from their friendly, albeit taciturn robot. Who else would loudly proclaim “Danger, Will Robinson” at the first sign of trouble?

Space (2015-2022)

The action takes place in the 24th century (as in some Star Trek series). Space is one of the most popular sci-fi shows of the new millennium. Based on a series of novels Daniel Abraham as well as Ty Frank, the series follows several characters unwittingly drawn into a gigantic conspiracy that threatens to destabilize the already faltering state of peace in the solar system.
