PKP Intercity has announced an increase in ticket prices for its flights. Internet users quickly calculated that flying from Warsaw to Krakow would be cheaper than traveling by train.

From January 11, railway workers will have an unpleasant surprise. PKP Intercity has just announced an increase in ticket prices. According to Internet users, a trip from Warsaw to Krakow will cost PLN 200. For a round-trip ticket for one person, you will have to pay more than 400 PLN.

PKP Intercity raises ticket prices

“PKP Intercity is adapting ticket prices to the current market situation – rising operating costs, primarily due to higher electricity prices and competitors’ price offers. The updated price list will come into effect on January 11, 2023. – read in the message.

One of the most important factors influencing the increase in the total costs for the provision of PKP Intercity services in 2023 is a significant change in electricity prices, which is the company’s largest expense item.

“Compared to January 2022, the price of electricity on the Polish Energy Exchange increased by as much as 62.18 percent. This will directly result in a significant increase in the active energy fee forecast for 2023, which is part of the traction electricity fee, and, as a result, in an increase in the cost of services provided by PKP Intercity. - read on.

Also, attention should be paid to the highest inflation rate in many years, which amounted to 17.5% as of November this year, as well as to the constant increase in interest rates, the carrier emphasizes.

PKP Intercity reminds that the current update is only the second systemic price change for PKP Intercity tickets since 2013-2014.

“The company’s latest forecasts show that operating costs per passenger could exceed 40 percent. It should be emphasized that the cost of traction energy is growing rapidly due to the observed market conditions, which can exceed 100%. per year, accordingly changing the structure of the company’s costs, increasing the share of costs for traction energy. - also written.

As noted, the change in ticket prices does not compensate for the effects of a significant increase in PKP Intercity’s operating costs, but only partially mitigate them.

Based on a detailed analysis, PKP Intercity increases the base prices of single tickets in certain categories of trains by an average of:

  • 17.8 percent for the EIP category;

  • 17.4 percent for the EIC category;

  • 11.8 percent for the TLK/IC category.

Tickets are over too.

The cost of the trip can be reduced by taking advantage of the carrier’s numerous promotional offers. Following the update of the price lists of single tickets, the prices of sectional tickets are also updated. They change by an average of 10 percent, keeping them competitive with other rail carriers, the carrier added.

For the first time since 2016, the prices for Intercity Cards are changing, which give the right to unlimited travel on the trains of the Intercity PKP on any routes.

“At the same time, in order to increase the attractiveness of the Multiprzejazd and Multiprzejazd Max offers, PKP Intercity extends the validity of the offer by several hours, i.e. until 24:00 on Thursday. So far, it has been in effect from Tuesday midnight to Thursday 3:00 pm. It invariably allows any number of trips on PKP Intercity trains during the period of validity. At the same time, it should be noted that the price of both proposals remains unchanged. - read further in the information.
