The Norwegian Armed Forces have shared a photo taken from an F-16 fighter jet showing the dramatic effect of a leak from the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline near Bornholm Island.
Nord Stream 2 is leaking. The same goes for his older brother. The Danes alerted ships sailing in the Baltic Sea, while Norway sent the frigate Absalon, the ship Gunnar Thorson to investigate the environmental risk, and a helicopter to the site of the three spills. However, the most interesting photo was taken by a Norwegian F-16 fighter, which flew over one of the gas leaks from the pipeline above the water surface.
Leaks in the Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines
The Danes also reported that Nord Stream 2 has one leak located south of the town of Dueodde on Bornholm, and two other leaks on the Nord Steam 1 pipeline northeast of the island. The discovery of leaks was reported by F-16 fighter jet pilots patrolling the area.
So far, there is no official information about the reasons for the failure of both gas pipelines almost simultaneously. It cannot be ruled out that this was sabotage, but the Danish Ministry of Energy refuses to comment on this issue. The case is also being investigated by pipeline operator Nord Stream AG, who said a pressure drop in the installation was indeed detected.
The Baltic Pipe is open
On September 27, the Baltic Pipe gas pipeline was officially opened, connecting Poland with Denmark, and therefore with the possibility of obtaining gas from the Norwegian continental shelf. The ceremony was attended by President Andrzej Duda and Prime Ministers of Poland and Denmark - Mateusz Morawiecki and Mette Frederiksen. The gas pipeline should make Poland independent of gas supplies from Russia.
- It is difficult to pass by the wreckage of the gas installation, but for me it is a very touching moment. After years of controversy, today we are finally opening the gas pipeline that has been a Polish dream for decades, said President Andrzej Duda.
“We have to fight Putin by imposing sanctions on Russia and freeing ourselves from Russian energy resources,” Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said, referring to recent leaks from Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2which, in her opinion, proves the need to become independent of the Russian energy sector. “We must do everything to ensure that Russia does not use energy as an instrument of power,” she added, calling for a faster green transformation.
