Users of over 1.1 million Tesla units have been called in for mandatory overhauls. The problem is unusual, but can have serious consequences.
Tesla is calling on more than 1.1 million car owners to complete mandatory vehicle inspections. The company discovered a seemingly minor problem that could actually be very serious. It is a window closing mechanism.
Dangerous windows in Tesla
It turns out that the system that was supposed to prevent clipping of objects when windows are closed does not work. It was the program and the sensors that were supposed to fix the situation when an object is in the path of the glass with the electric windows closed. According to the original idea, when encountering an element that shouldn’t be there, the closing of the window should be stopped immediately. It turns out that the system does not work as intended, and continues to close the window.
At first glance, this does not sound particularly serious, but it is easy to imagine situations that can lead to dangerous accidents or serious injuries.
Interestingly, the white paper that companies are forced to file with regulators in situations like this did not include a single complaint about the kind of defect that Tesla would report. There are also no cases of injury or death associated with the defect. The company decided to inform the authorities as it discovered the issue during internal testing.
Cloud repair
Tesla also believes that it is possible to fix the problem without coming to the repair shop. The company wants to try updating the car’s software first. Each of the owners will be able to do this by downloading new drivers. If this proves effective, Tesla will save itself a huge problem, as logistical support for 1.1 million vehicles will be very problematic and expensive. As already mentioned, we are talking about Model 3 2017-2022, Model Y 2020 and 2021 and Models S and X 2021 and 2022.
