Volkswagen has unveiled a camouflaged version of the new ID family model. – ID.7 at CES in Las Vegas. The new limousine will have a range of up to 700 km.
At CES (Consumer Electronics Show) - the world’s largest electronics exhibition, from January 5 to 8 - Volkswagen will show its first electric limousine based on the MEB platform. The car on display in Las Vegas will be camouflaged using a unique layered paint technology to create lighting effects on the body of the car. Camouflage is interactive.
“With the new ID.7, we are expanding our range of electric models to higher segments. The new limousine will offer the most modern technology and the highest quality. ID.7 is one of ten new electric models that we plan to release by 2026. Our goal is to offer electric vehicles in every segment,” says Thomas Schäfer, head of the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand.
ID.7 with easier handling and more comfort
With the latest model based on the MEB platform, VW has responded to customer feedback and introduced the expected modifications. In ID.7, the standard includes, among other things:
-
new display design
-
head-up display with augmented reality
-
15″ infotainment screen
-
new air conditioning controls
-
backlit touch slider
The new air conditioning system has unique features. For example, ID.7 can detect when the driver is approaching the vehicle and turn on interior cooling on hot summer days or interior heating in winter before the driver gets into the car. Newly developed “smart vents” control airflow and are positioned to distribute air throughout the vehicle as quickly as possible. If there are passengers in the car, the air can be directed directly at their bodies or indirectly ventilate the cabin. What is happening now with the air supply can be constantly seen on the new large display. Selected scripts can be saved individually for each user and then run as needed. They can also be activated using voice commands.
Interactive camouflage
At the CES show in Las Vegas, VW will show the ID.7 model in a special variant hidden under camouflage. The new limousine features a “digital” design with a unique livery with interactive lighting. The machine has 40 layers of varnish, some of which are conductive, and the rest are insulating. A total of 22 areas of the body can be independently controlled, which can glow due to the phenomenon of electroluminescence. The backlight can change to the beat of the music.
QR codes on the hood and sides of the car are the interface between the physical and digital worlds. The entire camouflage also continues the theme of the QR code and thus hides the contours of the stock car.
Opportunities of the OIE platform
In terms of design, the ID.7 is an evolution of the style known from other models in the ID model family. The distinctive features of the sedan include a streamlined body, which helps to reduce energy consumption and increase the power reserve. The front air intakes intelligently channel the air passing through them on the sides of the car to the rear. They form an air curtain that calms the air currents from the sides of the car. Falling down contributes to a low drag coefficient. The flight range should be about 700 kilometers.
Like other models in the ID family, the ID.7 is also based on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform. It is characterized by short overhangs and a long wheelbase (2.97 m), resulting in a spacious interior.
The identifier of the sixth machine.
After models ID.3, ID.4, ID.5 and ID.6 (the latter is only available in China) and the new ID. Buzz, the ID.7 will be the sixth model in the ID family. and the second global car from Volkswagen on the MEB platform after the ID.4. The electric sedan will be offered in three key markets - China, Europe and North America. The ID.7 for the European market will be built at the Volkswagen plant in Emden. This plant already produces the Volkswagen ID.4.
