Hyundai and Iveco confirmed the partnership of both companies with the presentation of the first large fuel cell van at the IAA in Hannover.
At IAA Transportation 2022 in Hannover, Hyundai Motor Company and Iveco Group presented the Iveco eDaily, their first hydrogen-powered delivery truck.
Following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in March 2022, the companies set up a series of joint technology working groups to explore how the two companies can complement each other in the development of electric vehicles and alternative drives.
Earlier in July, the two companies jointly unveiled the Iveco Bus, a hydrogen fuel cell bus developed by Hyundai. Now they have unveiled an eDaily fuel cell electric model that fully demonstrates the potential of Iveco’s best-selling and longest-running large van. Today, its powertrain lineup includes conventional and methane/biomethane engines, as well as a new electric model (BEV).
The fully functional eDaily FCEV prototype is powered by Hyundai’s 90kW hydrogen fuel cell system and 140kW electric motor. Six hydrogen tanks can store a total of 12 kg of fuel. The prototype, with a gross weight of 7.2 tons, was tested in Europe, confirming its parameters - a flight range of 350 km, a maximum payload of 3 tons and a refueling time of 15 minutes. While the electric Iveco eDaily BEV, also on display at IAA, is ideal for short trips, the hydrogen-powered eDaily FCEV will be an option for longer hauls where a larger payload and long range are required.
An important part of the eDaily FCEV are batteries from FPT Industrial, the Iveco Group’s powertrain brand, and the fuel cell system provided by Hyundai is the latest in the company’s 20-year history of hydrogen mobility. Advanced fuel cell technology is already being used in various market segments, especially in the commercial vehicle sector. This hydrogen transmission, fitted to heavy trucks, has traveled more than 4.5 million kilometers in Switzerland.
